In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to a complainant named Sojish of Nettoor, in accordance with an order from the state human rights commission. The compensation, ordered by the additional chief secretary of the home department, will be deducted from the salary of the accused former SI of Panangad in three equal instalments. Chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, had made the decision to award the compensation to Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, who was allegedly beaten up by former Panangad SI Vipin AB. The complaint arose when Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI while he was hospitalized without proper authorization. Consequently, Sojish lodged a complaint with the commission, which then ordered a case to be filed against the SI, along with the directive for compensation to be paid. Despite a probe being conducted and disciplinary action taken against the SI, no compensation had been given. The government noted that the SI had the opportunity to present a defense before the commission's final decision was made, but failed to do so. Subsequently, the government issued the order to provide a compensation of Rs 25,000 to Sojish.
